This May Half Term TWC in collaboration with A2 Dominion delivered the pilot phase of GRO a new innovative project for young people who live in the North Brentford Quarter in the London Borough of Hounslow.
Officially called Go-Reach-Out or GRO for short, the idea was simple; create a local enterprise project spearheaded by young people, where they learn about a product, create and sell the product which will provide benefit for their local community and themselves.
For the pilot we decided to focus on the local environment. As summer was almost here we thought we would get the young people out into the garden to discover their local habitats.
Day one involved a trio to Kew Gardens where the young people saw many different plants in a variety of environments
Day two was a trio to B&Q Chiswick where Shauna and the Team went out of their way to help the young people select plants which would be good to sell
Day three the team were at Clayponds Community Centre where they painted flower pots and created posters to advertise the sale
Leonie (one of the young people) said: “I like this project. I liked buying the plants and making money. The money bit was the best.”
Harrison (one of the tutors ) added:” This project allowed them freedom to make their own decisions about what they were going to buy and sell. The kids got a real understanding of how much things cost and what would sell. Needless to say there was a lot of haggling going on!”
